The Morning Chronicle reported:

"As usual the most delicious part of the entertainment was a new grand Overture [that is, symphony] by HAYDN; the inexhaustible, the wonderful, the sublime HAYDN!  The first two movements were encored; and the character that pervaded the whole composition was heartfelt joy.  Every new Overture he writes, we fear, till it is heard, he can only repeat himself; and we are every time mistaken." 

Symphony No. 101 in D major, "The Clock"  (1793/1794)

Symphony No. 104 in D major, "London"  (1795)

              Vienna Philharmonic, Bernard Haitnik

Haydn wrote in his diary "The whole company was thoroughly pleased and so was I.  I made 4000 gulden on this evening: such a thing is possible only in England."

                   Monothematic 

            II.  Andante

           III.  Menuetto and Trio: Allegro

           IV.  Finale: Spiritoso

                   A Croatian folk song melody Oj, Jelena, Jelena, jabuka zelena ("Oh, Helen, Helen,
                   green apple of mine").  Haydn also used Gypsy and Austrian folk melodies.
